“Potato Lab” is a Korean rom-com, which I am embarrassed to say I’m now watching for the THIRD time on Netflix.

There are a lot of reasons I’ve got into this series. I’ve been really enjoying watching K-dramas over the last year but this one has hooked me in more than any other. Being rom-coms, they are very predictable but the twists and turns always catch me out, and they tend to run for very many more episodes than you would have thought possible. I’ve enjoyed learning about everyday Korean life, manners and etiquette and comparing how little details differ from my own British way of life.

But why this one so much? Both the protagonists describe themselves as weird / crazy. The hero is an emotionally repressed orphan who has brought himself up and lives by his own principles and set of strict rules. He is obsessional and inflexible. The heroine has also had a difficult upbringing, parenting her siblings from her teenage years, very warm hearted but also very fiery with anger management issues and difficulties in managing her emotions.

Obviously everything is exaggerated for comic effect but I can see similarities in both characters, both in myself and my partner. It is a very comforting watch as they fight their way to a happy ending.
